Lack Exercise Effects Body

Effects of gaming on health?
My brother likes playing a lot of online games, mainly first-person shooter games. He can play those games for hours on end without much of a break. I'm talking anywhere from 3-12 hours without taking breaks other than going to the bathroom, showering, and eating.
I would assume that being in such an alert and excited state would cause stress on the body. I know that playing for such long periods can have negative health effects such as strain on the eyes and potentially lead to lack of exercise.
I am wondering if being in a continual state of such arousal and excitement, by playing fast-paced video games, can cause more serious negative health problems? Is the body capable of handling that type of stress or prolonged periods of being in an excited state, or will it cause a strain on his mental health and/or adrenal glands? Will the chemicals that are released by his brain from being in such an excited state eventually lead to a dependence or possible addiction?
Usually games aren't designed to put the player in a constant state of excitation. Like movies, games are paced to be fast and slow at different times. They might build to a crescendo of activity and then move into a quieter scene to let the player regroup. If a game was constant relentless intense action the entire time then it would be exhausting and not fun.
When you play a game a lot you also get used to it, and so the adrenaline doesn't pump the same as the first time you played it. You learn to recognize scenarios and know what to expect at certain moments.
There are studies about teens becoming more aggressive if they play violent games for long periods but nothing about breeding addictive tendencies.
You might want to suggest to your parents that they set time limits for playing and check the ratings of games he is playing. 3- 12 hours per day is too much.
You might also want to read more about addiction: predispositions, causes, signs.

Pediatric Exercise Medicine $105.48 Pediatric Exercise Medicine: From Physiologic Principles to Health Care Application draws from the most current research activity in the area to examine physical activity as a prerequisite to the good health and physical performance of children. The book also considers the effects of lack of exercise on children and the relevance of exercise to clinical pediatrics for children with chronic diseases. While Pediatric Exercise Medicine: From Physiologic Principles to Health Care Application emphasizes clinically related issues, it provides comprehensive coverage of the child-exercise-health triad of importance to all professionals serving young people. The text identifies current research in the area of pediatric exercise. It also helps the reader to compare the exercise responses of healthy children to the responses of children with clinical impairments. In turn, readers will recognize the factors that can influence children's activity behavior, trainability, and performance. The book contains three chapters related to the normal physiological and perceptual exercise responses of the healthy child. The next nine chapters consider the effects of exercise on children with clinical impairments, including asthma, diabetes, cerebral palsy, and obesity. A special feature is the coverage of children's trainability and the factors that can influence performance. The information, including environmental stressors on children, will be of interest to scholars and students as well as to coaches working in this area. The book also has these features: • Extensive graphic interpretation of the data—more than 250 illustrations • Helpful reference tables • Six appendixes on normative data, methods, energy-equivalent tables for different activities, scaling for body size, and a glossary of terms. Exercise Biochemistry $92.48 Exercise Biochemistry brings an admittedly difficult and technical subject to life. Extremely user- and student-friendly, it is written in conversational style by Vassilis Mougios, who poses and then answers questions as if in conversation with a student. Mougios does an excellent job of making the information interesting by using simple language without compromising scientific accuracy and content. He also uses ample analogies, related works of art, and numerous illustrations to drive home his points for readers. The result is that Exercise Biochemistry is a highly informative and illuminating text on the effects of exercise on molecular-level functioning. It presents the basics of biochemistry as well as in-depth coverage of exercise biochemistry. The book uses key terms, sidebars, and questions and problems posed at the end of each chapter to facilitate learning. It also covers metabolism, endocrinology, and assessment all in one volume, unlike other exercise biochemistry books. In exploring all of these topics, Exercise Biochemistry makes the case for exercise biochemistry to have a stand-alone textbook. In fact, this book will encourage more universities to introduce exercise biochemistry courses to their curricula. Having the necessary topics of basic biochemistry in a single volume will facilitate the work of both instructors and students. Exercise Biochemistry will also be useful to graduate students in sport science who have not been formally introduced to exercise biochemistry during their undergraduate programs. Additionally, it can supplement exercise physiology textbooks with its coverage of the molecular basis of physiological processes. This book is also for physical education and sport professionals who have an interest in how the human body functions during and after exercise. And this book is addressed to health scientists who are interested in the transformations in human metabolism brought about by physical activity. The book is organized in four parts. Part I introduces readers to biochemistry basics, including chapters on metabolism, proteins, nucleic acids and gene expression, and carbohydrates and lipids. Part II consists of two chapters that explore neural control of movement and muscle contraction. The essence of the book is found in part III, which details exercise metabolism in its six chapters. Included are chapters on carbohydrate, lipid, and protein metabolism in exercise; compounds of high phosphoryl transfer potential; effects of exercise on gene expression; and integration of exercise metabolism. In part IV, the author focuses on biochemical assessment of people who exercise, with chapters on iron status, metabolites, and enzymes and hormones. Simple biochemical tests are provided to assess an athlete's health and performance. Exercise Biochemistry is a highly readable book that serves as a source for understanding how exercise changes bodily functions. The text is useful for both students and practitione... |

Exercise and Its Mediating Effects on Cognition (Aging, Exercise and Cognition) $56.48 Current research is changing the notion that little can be done to deflect the inexorable damage done to the brain by the aging process. Exercise and Its Mediating Effects on Cognition shows that although many factors contribute to a healthy mind, an active lifestyle provides positive contributions to the cognitive functioning of the aging brain. Exercise and Its Mediating Effects on Cognition examines how physical activity can indirectly affect cognitive function by influencing mediators--such as sleep quality, nutrition, disease states, anxiety, and depression--that affect physical and mental resources for cognition. This volume also identifies and studies key sources of individual variations in exercise and cognitive processes. Seventeen internationally recognized experts in exercise, cognition, neurobiological processes, and aging provide a review of the state of knowledge and, where appropriate, provide practical applications of research findings. The book's review of research will update and expand current thinking on pertinent issues regarding the relationship between exercise and cognition. The research presented in Exercise and Its Mediating Effects on Cognition is organized within a general model that illustrates the interrelationships of exercise and physical activity and the mediators that enhance cognition. Each chapter begins with an overview of how the topic fits into the general model. Following each chapter, a summary provides not only the highlights of the chapter but also the consensus or controversies associated with the chapter topic. The first chapter outlines the exercise-cognition model developed by Spirduso, Poon, Chodzko-Zajko, and the text's contributors. Chapter 2 discusses exercise, mediators that affect physical and mental resources for cognition, and the combined relational effect on the cognitive process. Chapters 3 through 5 present research conducted on exercise and cognition in relation to depression, stress, and self-efficacy. Chapter 6 discusses cognitive energetics. Methodological problems of exercise and mental resources are presented in chapter 7; and diet, motor behavior, and cognition are discussed in chapter 8. Chapters 9 and 10 discuss the relationships between exercise, sleep, and cognition. The effects of exercise on cognition in cases of hypertension, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are presented in chapters 11 through 13. In the final chapter, the editors offer conclusions and future research directions. Exercise and Its Mediating Effects on Cognition is the second of a three-volume series in Human Kinetics' Aging, Exercise, and Cognition series, which presents advanced research and key issues for understanding and researching the links between exercise, aging, and cognition. In Exercise and Its Mediating Effects on Cognition, internationally known experts define current knowledge and future directions to address issues of active living, cognitive functioning, and aging. ... |

Nature's Ritalin for the Marathon Mind: Nurturing Your ADHD Child with Exercise $6.49 ADHD is an epidemic among young Americans, millions of whom are on a regimen of prescription drugs. Meanwhile, exercise has become a less routine part of childhood than at any time in the past. Are those two trends related? Could lack of daily exercise be a factor in ADHD?Exercise has a neurochemical effect on the brain similar to that of the popular medications, without the unwanted side effects. Stephen C. Putnam reviews in detail the scientific literature and practical experiments showing that exercise is remarkably effective in treating ADHD. He shows how to determine the right amount of exercise, and how to motivate your children to keep up their activities. This is not an anti-Ritalin book. The author acknowledges that medication is sometimes helpful and cautions that care should be taken whenever changing from one treatment to another. However, he notes that a great many children have been able to reduce medication or eliminate it entirely with a regular schedule of exercise -- greatly improving classroom performance, social life, and overall well-being.This is hopeful, helpful information for millions of children and their parents, teachers, coaches, and counselors. Reading it will change the way you think about ADHD. |
